Stax Records in the UK
Forget Atlantic and Tamla Motown. Stax took them all on and won hands down. The music still sounds fresh today - so it gets sampled and sampled and sampled and.... Brother and sister, Jim Stewart and Estelle Axton started in 1957 with the Satellite record label initially issuing country based rock 'n' roll songs. After a few false starts, they finally made it with Rufus Thomas and his daughter Carla and this set the new style of the company. After the national success of 'Last Night' by The Mar-Keys they were forced into a name change and Stax Records was born. There are plenty of other sites dedicated to Stax in the USA. Here, we concentrate on material that was issued in the UK and - to some extent - the rest of the world. |
